Summer Reading 2019

With Memorial Weekend upon us and summer break so close it’s time to start talking about Summer Reading at the library! For us librarians, Summer Reading is the time of year when we do everything – and we literally mean everything! Hard copies of our Summer Reading schedule are available at all our library locations and it’s posted below too! But if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Summer Reading Kick-Off: Saturday, June 15 from 12:00pm – 5:00pm at Thornton Library!

Adults:

  • June 29 @ 2:00pm (Thornton Library): American Songster – Dom Flemons
  • The month of July is the “County-wide read The Last Ballad by Wiley Cash”!
  • July 1 @ 6:00pm (Thornton Library): Pie in the Sky Dessert Competition
  • July 17 @ 6:00pm (Thornton Library): Book Reading and Signing by author Wiley Cash
  • July 31 @ 7:00pm (Tobacco Wood in Oxford): Trivia Night with Tobacco Wood Brewing

Teens (6th Grade through 12th Grade):

  • Teen Volunteers: Do you love kids, getting crafty, organizing spaces, or just all things library-related in general? Come volunteer with us! You can fulfill any requirements you have for school or just have another fun thing to do this summer. Volunteer applications are available at all our library locations.
  • Teen Time: Join us to hang out, eat snacks, and beat your friends in board games and video games!
    • South:            Tuesday, June 18 at 3:30pm & Tuesday, July 16 at 3:30pm
    • Thornton:     Saturday, Jun 1 at 2:00pm & Saturday, July 6 at 2:00pm
  • Teen Club: We’re giving teens a voice at the library! They decide the programs they want plus give their opinions on the books/DVDs that land on our library shelves.
    • Thornton:     Saturday, June 1 at 4:00pm & Saturday, July 6 at 4:00pm
  • Iron Chef Competition (Registration Required): Grab a partner and get ready to face-off in a high stakes cooking competition! Register online or at Thornton Library!
    • Thornton:     Friday, June 21 @ 2:00pm (Contestants will cook from 3:00pm – 4:00pm)
  • Canvas Painting Class: Even if your *painting skills* begin and end with stick figures, you’ll love this relaxing afternoon, following a simple example that’ll make you look like an expert!
    • Thornton:     Friday, July 26 at 2:00pm
  • Harry Potter and the Battle for the House Cup: Your Hogwarts House needs you! Get sorted into your house by the sorting hat, then join your house-mates and earn points to win the house cup! Register at granville.lib.nc.us or at South.)
    • South:            Wednesday, August 21 at 4:00pm
