InterLibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loans are now free of charge to all GCLS cardholders.  Patrons of one library may borrow material that is owned by another library outside of the NC Cardinal consortium.  Library “material” includes books, audiovisual materials and other returnable items; as well as copies of journal articles, documents, book chapters, excerpts and other non-returnable items.

For the Granville County Library System, an interlibrary loan can also mean borrowing items from NC Cardinal (a consortium of libraries throughout the state of North Carolina).

NC Cardinal is a consortium of North Carolina public libraries that share an online catalog and integrated library system (ILS); and share resources with other member libraries.  The program’s mission is to maintain and continually develop a working, efficient, and sustainable ILS for public libraries and library staff within North Carolina. One of the most exciting aspects of NC Cardinal is the sharing of items across our state free of charge to our Patrons.

Before placing an Interlibrary Loan request be sure the item is not available either within the Granville County Library System or at an NC Cardinal library.

Eligibility

Patrons must have an active Granville County Library card to request material via ILL. Patrons outside of the GCLS are encouraged to request this service through their home libraries. All transactions are from library to library.

Restrictions on Borrowed Material

The lending library may impose restrictions on materials lent, including requiring that the material be used only in the borrowing library (in-house use). The lending library determines the length of time for which the material is lent and whether renewals will be granted.  The lending library also has the right to recall material before the due date.

When making an ILL request, the patron should indicate any deadline for receipt of material and whether material will not be needed after a given date.  The average delivery time for books is 7-14 business days. Journal articles are usually delivered electronically within 3-5 business days. Rare or hard-to-find materials may take longer; and some may not be available through the Interlibrary Loan program.

Procedure for Placing a Request

To request an interlibrary loan, the patron completes an Interlibrary Loan Request Form, which may be submitted in person, by fax, or directly through the library’s online ILL Request Form.   Staff will telephone the patron when the requested material has arrived. Patrons are expected to pick up the requested item within seven (7) days or fewer depending upon the loan period for the item. Items not picked up within that period will be returned to the lending library.
