Upcoming D.E.I. Initiatives
- The GCLS must continue to identify community needs, set goals that align with our values and develop a plan.
- We will increase diversity awareness and sensitivities by conducting diversity audits to examine who is represented in our library & our collection.
- We will introduce programs that may be lacking or limited by other county entities.
- Provide variety programming that will appeal to all groups; homeschoolers, boys & girls clubs, minorities, seniors; etc.

- Annual Granville County JUNETEENTH FREEDOM DAY is scheduled for Saturday – June 17, 2023. In conjunction with The BRIDGE GC, this day commemorates the emancipation of slavery and celebrates the day of freedom for African Americans. (Richard Thornton Library & Wall St., 10a – 5p)
- Sensory Cart OPEN HOUSE scheduled @ Thornton and South Branch locations:
- March 4th (1 – 4pm) South Branch
- March 8th (1 – 4pm) Thornton Branch
- March 11th (10a – 1pm) Thornton Branch
- March 14th (1 – 4pm) South Branch
- A sensory cart can be used by anyone to relax, reduce anxiety, calm, de-escalate and improve focus. It houses a number of features which allow a user to control their environment in order to foster a safe stress-free atmosphere. Just roll, park, and plug in to create a spectacular sensory experience.

- Explore additional language needs of the community. (Multilingual services)
- Advertise programs in Spanish language.
- Increase Historical References and outreach efforts for African American and other minority groups within our service area.
- Locate history of Mexican immigrants into Granville County.
- Migration to Granville County began in 1982.
- OUTREACH
- Granville Correctional Institution – donating books & magazines to inmates of the facility.
- Provide pop-up library for the Latin community through Saint Cyprian Church and other community groups.
- Introduce a general Adult Book Club @ Thornton
- Provide a book mobile, pop up or compatible service to the Creedmoor Senior Center.
- Deliver presentation to the Senior Centers about library services; lead a needs assessment and Q & A. (TBD)
- SPECIAL PROGRAMS
- The African American Dance Ensemble to deliver an oral presentation or dance recital. TBD.
- Locate history of Mexican immigrants into Granville County.
