Richard H. Thornton Library – STEAM Program Assistant 

  • Hours: 2 hours per week on Thursdays, 3:45pm – 5:30pm.
  • Responsibilities: STEAM is the weekly science program targeted for elementary students (grades kindergarten – 6th grade). Each week the Children’s Librarian facilitates a new science experiment, art activity, or cooking project. Program assistants help the Children’s Librarian by passing out supplies, crowd control, and helping children complete the assignment. Program assistants will also help with program set-up and clean-up.

Richard H. Thornton Library – Teen Book Club Facilitator

  • Hours: As the Teen Book Club Facilitator, the volunteer would need to commit to facilitating a monthly (or bi-monthly) book club meeting. Hours and preferred day of the week can be discussed with the Children’s Librarian. Required volunteer timeframe will need to include set-up, the book club meeting, and clean- up.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Lead a monthly (or bi-monthly) book club for 4-12 attendees, depending on the volunteer’s comfort level.
    • Curate a list of books and/or genres that interest the group. The facilitator will work closely with the Children’s Librarian to ensure the books arrive in a timely manner so that book club members have time to pick up the book and read it before the next meeting.
    • Responsible for creating questions and guiding the conversation around that month’s book as well as creating a welcoming experience to all book club members. The volunteer is responsible for facilitating a meeting in which all members feel safe to be themselves.
    • Spend adequate time reading the book(s) and preparing for each book club meeting, including prepping a list of questions to ask and/or conversation starters.
    • Communicate regularly, efficiently, and directly with the Children’s Librarian regarding the program’s preparation and progress after each meeting.

Richard H. Thornton Library – Teen Team

  • Hours: 2 hours per month on the third Thursday of each month, 6:00pm – 7:30pm.
  • Responsibilities: Teen Team is a monthly leadership team consisting of local teens who want to help lead programs and various initiatives for the Granville County Library System. Each month, Teen Team members will attend that week’s “Teen Time” activity, then stay for an extra 30 minutes after Teen Time to discuss upcoming teen projects and Young Adult collection suggestions with the Children’s Librarian. Teen Team members may also be asked to organize and lead the programs they suggest and/or research new ideas to improve the Young Adult area at the library.
  • Qualifications: Strong communication skills. Previous experience directing programs for teens and/or children a plus. Able to work well with others. Open to new ideas and willing to discuss differences in a respectful manner. Willing to lead new projects and research new ideas in personal time. Qualifications, strong communication skills.   • Hours: 2 hours per week on Thursdays, 5:30pm – 7:30pm.
  • Responsibilities: Teen Time is the weekly teen program for middle school and high school students, ages 12 – 18. Each week, the Children’s Librarian prepares various activities including crafts, cooking, service projects, movie nights, and game nights. Program assistants help the Children’s Librarian by passing out supplies, crowd control, and explaining the assignment. Program assistants will also help with program set-up and clean-up.
  • Qualifications: Patient, tolerant, and caring manner. Welcoming to new attendees. Must be able to communicate clearly in a tactful, courteous, and pleasant manner with library staff, teens, and parents. Punctual and reliable. Should be able to explain assignment directions. Neat appearance.

Richard H. Thornton Library – “Dungeon Master” (DM) for Dungeons & Dragons

  • Description: In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master (or “DM”), the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore. The DM describes the locations and creatures in an adventure, and the players decide what they want their characters to do. Then the DM, using imagination and the game’s rules, determines the results of their actions and narrates what they experience.
  • Hours: As a DM, the volunteer would need to commit to running a monthly (or bi-monthly) game. Hours and preferred day of the week can be discussed with the Children’s Librarian. Required volunteer timeframe will need to include set-up, the adventure, and clean-up.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Lead a D&D program for 4-8 attendees, depending on the volunteer’s comfort level.
    • Run an engaging program that is rewarding for players and maintains library values. D&D at the library provides a welcoming experience to all players. As the DM, the volunteer is also responsible for facilitating a session in which all players feel safe to be themselves.
    • Spend adequate time reading and preparing the story for each session, including characterization for non-player characters (NPCs), map making, and adventure crafting. The volunteer would be able to come to the library for preparation time before each session or may prepare on personal time.
    • Enact the set-up and take-down of each session, including but not limited to putting away materials, tables, responsible for providing any additional desired materials.
    • Communicate regularly, efficiently, and directly with Children’s Librarian regarding the program’s preparation and progress each session.

Richard H. Thornton Library – Shelf Upkeeper

  • Hours: 2 – 6 hours per week. Students make their own schedule with a commitment to volunteer at least 2 hours each week. This opportunity is great for those with extra busy schedules or for those who can only volunteer on Saturdays!
  • Responsibilities: You are assigned to either the Children’s area or the Young Adult area at the Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford. In your assigned area, you’re responsible for keeping books in alphabetical and/or numerical order, displaying books so that the shelves are visually attractive, re-shelving mis-shelved books, and (occasionally) cleaning shelves.
  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of the Dewey Decimal System. Must possess excellent alpha-numeric skills! Ability to understand and follow directions, accuracy, patience, and a tolerance for meticulous work. Good vision, ability to get along well with others, and communicate pleasantly with patrons and library staff. Neat appearance.

Richard H. Thornton Library – Teen Blogger

  • Hours: Teen volunteers make their own schedule with a commitment to volunteer for a minimum of 1 hour per week. This opportunity is great for those with extra busy schedules!
  • Responsibilities: The Granville County Library System is beginning a teen blog located on the library’s website. Teen Bloggers will write weekly blog posts covering topics that interest them and are related to the library. Teen Bloggers will also write regular book reviews featuring the books and authors they are currently reading. All book reviews and blog posts are required to be between 500 to 2,500 words.
  • Qualifications: Strong written communication skills a must and previous experience writing book reviews or blog posts a plus. Organized, independent worker, committed to the workload, able to work under deadlines, willing to research new topics and/or read books fairly often during their personal time. Open to accepting criticism with a desire to improve their writing ability. Able to discuss new ideas with the Children’s Librarian.

South Branch Library – Storytime Program Assistant

  • Hours: 1.5 hours per week on Tuesdays, 10:15am – 11:30am.
  • Responsibilities: Storytime is the weekly program targeted for babies, toddlers, and young children (ages 0-7). Each week the Children’s Librarian presents a program including a story, song, dance, interactive activity, and craft. Program assistants help the Children’s Librarian by passing out supplies, crowd control, and helping children complete the craft. Program assistants will also help with program set-up and clean-up.
  • Qualifications: Patient, tolerant, and caring manner. Previous experience with children a plus. Must be able to communicate clearly in a tactful, courteous, and pleasant manner with library staff, children, and parents. Punctual and reliable. Neat appearance.

South Branch Library – Library Assistant

  • Hours: Flexible; at discretion of Children’s Librarian and volunteers.
  • Responsibilities: Library Assistants aide with the day to day running of the Children’s Department of the library. Tasks can include program preparation, craft cutting, book organization and weeding, creating library displays, or general library decorating and cleanup.
  • Qualifications: Must be able to communicate clearly in a tactful, courteous, and pleasant manner with library staff and patrons. Punctual and reliable. Neat appearance.

  • Hours: Once a month from 4:30-5:30.
